Group, formerly
Machina Sapiens, announced today that it initiated
talks with spokespeople for the Catalan government
on producing a Catalan corrector modelled on the
Correcteur 101, recognized as one of the world’s
best correction tools. The announcement was made
at a press conference in Barcelona where the integration
of GLALG, the Catalan software producer, to documens was also announced.
Catalan government representatives and Québec’s
Delegate to Catalonia were at the press conference.
The
Corrector project is particularly interesting in
the case of Catalonia, Spain, with its capital in
Barcelona. The province has a population of five
million and two official languages: Spanish and
Catalan. The Catalan Corrector project thus meets
a real need that resembles the situation in
Québec. Francesc Civit, Vice-President,
Globalisation, documens, says that, “the
coexistance of both languages is often a cause for
many errors, especially in commerce. The corrector
will help improve communications in Catalan and
raise the quality of the
language.”
The
Catalan Corrector will be based on the technology
of the Correcteur 101 and the Bilingual Corrector.
Claude Coulombe, Vice-President, Technology and
R&D, documens, stresses that an
educational version for students of the upcoming
Catalan Corrector is also planned. An on-line
dictation program modelled on the Dictée PGL,
which won an Octas in Québec in 1999, will also
form part of the project. With this application, a
student listens to a dictation from an audio file
downloaded from the Internet and sent in real time
using MediaPlayer, RealAudio or QuickTime Client.
The student then simply enters the dictation in a
Web text field and sends it to the correction
server. One minute later, the student receives an
e-mail containing the corrected text with
explanations. This application will also be made
available in Catalan.

aims to meet the language needs of both
individuals and companies in the public and
private sectors, as does the Bilingual Corrector
for French and English, launched in Québec in
March 2002.
